AVALANCHE EQUIPMENT
What avalanche equipment should you carry?
Necessary Avalanche Equipment
The basic equipment for each backcountry traveler includes four things. These include an avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel, and a communication device. By carrying these essential tools, one can facilitate the search and rescue of avalanche victims.
Transceiver
An avalanche transceiver is a vital piece of safety equipment. They are used to locate individuals buried under the snow. About the size of a cell phone, it’s a small, handheld device that transmits and receives radio signals. The transceiver allows rescuers to pinpoint the location of a buried person wearing a similar device.
Probe
An avalanche probe is a long, thin, collapsible rod. Rescuers use them to pinpoint the location of a burial subject. Probes allow rescuers to pinpoint exactly where they need to dig. When combining it with a cord, they can be used to isolate test columns too.
Shovel
An avalanche shovel is a specialized tool. The shovel’s design is for efficient snow removal during avalanche rescues and snow stability testing. To save on weight, it consists of a lightweight, durable, and packable design. To help with storage, the shovel typically is a metal blade and a telescoping handle.
Communication Device
A communication device is a two-way radio for use in remote, off-grid areas. They are essential tools for communication and safety. These radios enable users to stay in contact with their group. Users can share information about conditions and hazards and even coordinate rescue efforts when necessary.
